Solo Mobile Prepaid Cell Phone Plans

Editor Rating
Overview

Solo Mobile is a nationwide Canadian cellular provider. It is owned by Bell Mobility, and is made to compete with Fido, Rogers' low-cost subsidiary.

Pros:
Rates are reasonably low and simple. Billing is handled by the second, not rounded up to the next highest minute.

Cons: The phones are very expensive without a contract. Using any data services without their unlimited mobile browsing plan can get very expensive.

Detailed Provider Information

Plans: The basic Solo Mobile plan is 40 cents per minute for anytime minutes, and 5 cents per minute for evening calls. Evenings begin at 7 p.m. For a dollar per day, you can add either unlimited incoming calls or unlimited evenings and weekends. There is a $3.96 monthly access fee as well.

Customer Service: Customer service is available from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. Customer service is closed on Sundays and weekends. They can be reached through a Solo Mobile phone, a toll free number, or by email.

Credit Check: None

Contract: None

Payment Options: Funds can be added to your Solo Mobile account by purchasing a top-up card at a retail outlet, by signing up for an automatic top-up program, or refilling through your credit card. Participating CBIC bank machines can also offer refill options.

Text and Picture Messaging: Basic text messaging is 15 cents for each message sent, and free for incoming messages. International text messages are 20 cents each way. A bundle of 50 text messages can be purchased for 3 dollars per month, 100 text messages are 5 dollars per month, and 2,500 messages are 10 dollars per month. Picture messaging costs 35 cents per message.

Data Plans: Solo Mobile prepaid offers unlimited mobile browsing for $7 per month. For a la carte data, the rate is 3 cents per KB. Windows Live Messenger can be added on for 3 dollars per month.

Downloadables: Ringtones, ringback tones, games, and screensavers are available for varying rates.

International Calling: International calling is available. See Solo's website for rates.

Roaming Charges: Roaming rates are $1.80 per minute.

Calling Features: Solo Mobile offers caller ID, call waiting, and call forwarding for no additional charge. Three-way calling is available for 3 dollars per month.

Activation Fee: There is no activation fee with Solo Mobile prepaid. However, if you are moving from a postpaid account to a prepaid account, there is a one-time 35 dollar fee.

Long Distance: Long distance calls to the U.S. and Canada are available for 30 cents per minute plus normal airtime rates.

411 Calls: Directory assistance from Solo Mobile costs $1.99 per call.

Earliest Minute Expiration: A refill of 20 dollars is good for 45 days, and a refill of 30 dollars lasts 75 days.

911 Calls: There is a 50 cent monthly fee for e911 service

Phones: Solo Mobile carries a number of phones, many of which are high end. However, most of them are advertised for the 3-year-contract price. These are much more expensive on prepaid. These include some smartphones, which aren't ideal for Solo's mobile browsing plan -- they require a full data plan.

once you buy this service you are on your own !
the prepaid card numbers wont work putting them in yourself so you have to phone for them to imput the numbers and of course they charge for that.
if your time is going to run out on a certain date, be warned it will run out a week before !
my phone was a camera phone, and i uploaded the pictures to the album on the net, only to find the folders blank and no pictures.
worst phone, and provider i even had, and service, well there was none !
i called and complained many times and nothing was done.

I have been a Solo mobile Customer of Solo mobile for 6 years coming up on 7 now, the company has changed quite a few times since I initially joined with them, in some ways for the better and in others for the worse, I stand by this company though. they have treateds me very well over my years and I could not be happier, I recomend them to everyone, and most of my friends do the same.

I have been a solomobile customer since they started. At first everything was wonderful. I liked that you didn't need a contract and I had unlimited free text messaging and free web browser. The problems arose when I didn't think I needed a monthly plan and I went to pre-paid. I lost my free text messaging and had to pay .40 a minute for calls and had to pay for my texts. They definately don't treat you well if you are on prepaid. You have to pay a fee to talk to a customer service agent and I pay $5.00 per month for 250 texts. But when you run out of money on your calls you also can not send texts even though you have already paid for them for the month. They don't treat you very well for being a customer since they started. I'm not sure if I will stay as a customer as I don't like being treated like this.

NEVER USE SOLO MOBOILE PREPAID. BELIEVE ME!! The customer service is TERRIBLE and they charge you for EVERYTHING. (want to talk to customer service? 3$!!). If your not sure keep searching the reviews. you will find a plethora of unhappy customers.
I tried to top up my account - it said there was a problem and I'd have to contact customer service. I tried. the automated service said it would call me back in 20-30 minutes. An hour later I tried again. this time it said 30 to 40 minutes. I waited another hour. I phoned again. This time I waited on the phone for 2 hours before someone answered!! I had a very important phone call that I had missed and in addition most of my day was wasted. They would do nothing to compensate me. In addition they basically admitted their prepaid service was terrible ("we often have problems and we can't compensate everybody" - are you kidding me?!?!?) I will use the last of the minutes I have on my phone and will then transfer to another provider. NEVER USE SOLO MOBILE.

I've gone through numerous cell phone carriers: Clearnet, Telus, T-Mobile, Virgin, Fido and Solo. Of these carriers, Solo is hands down the WORST provider I have ever had. I am thankful that I only got a month to month contract with them. Customer service is terrible... and the hours of customer service are dismal. If you have a problem with your phone over the weekend (or heaven forbid, a long weekend) you are SOL until 10am (wtf!?) the next business day. When I first got my phone with solo, It took them a month to port my number over. It took me 2 weeks to get a temporary number from them. So, I had 2 weeks of "service" during which I was charged, but could not use the service. I bought the Sanyo S1 phone. It is a god awful phone. Texting is an absolute disaster on it. What makes things worse, is that they still sell the damn phone, even though they know it's a piece of junk. Which brings me to solo's selection of phones... or lack there of. Guess the only thing I really cant complain about is the coverage, which actually was half decent.

Anyways, do all yourselves a favor, and stay away from Solo. Tell your friends. You'll be better off throwing all other alternatives into a hat and picking one at random.

I wish I coule give them 0 stars. Like many others have stated there is basically no customer support. I haven't even been able to setup my phone properly yet. According to their self serve site I am on the 35 unbeatable plane but my phone stops working every couple days and says my balance is too low. And I just checked my credit card and they have been charging me 22$ everytime this happens. Theres no way of fixing this because according to the self serve there is no problem to fix and there is no way to talk to a real person and the people who have been emailing me are completely incompetent. Please whatever you do don't get a solo phone.

I was a Solo customer for 2 years and their customer service is really very bad. I had to cancel my account because I was dissatisfied, and it takes more than 3 months for them to process my refund and I still haven't received it. When I called and asked to speak with a manager, I was put through to Gabrielle who claimed to be a manager of customer care, who was very rude, did not want to address my concern, and she hung up on me when I insisted to speak to someone else to complain. Do not deal with this company unless you can live without the need to speak to customer service.

I am a solo prepaid customer I downloaded a song one night that was only supposed to cost 3.50 I had 20.00 on my card after I downloade I shut the phone off awkoke the nest day and my time had expired to the point It said I owed 1.93 now when I try to get ahold of solo all I get is a message saying customer service is now closed. I am not the richest person in the world and I dont think solo is living up to thier standards as I feel I ahve been robbed for my time I have asked everyone if maaybe I did something wrong and they all said no that solo does make alot of mistakes. well how can they stay in business if they keep making errors like this whats small to some people is lardge to me. So be careful watch your time and most of all look into all other services before you get trapped

I would give this company services a 0
I called at the beginning of Sept to have my daughters phone disconnected as it was stolten, I left a "message" on the after hours recording 4 times but "solo" never canceled the phone, I left messages various times through the month to have the phone disconnected and still it wasn't, now as there are charges "solo" states there was no record at all This company gives very very poor customer service and I will not recommend them to anyone. Solo does not want to take the responsiblity on the error that was made on their part. If a phone is stolen beware of this companys inability to take the proper action of disconnecting it, nor can this company return repeated requests for a "CALL BACK" and then they lie to say they did - Sorry Solo people do sit by their phones waiting and do not appreciated being lied to by saying that your company did call back - also people do have voice messages not to mention call display.. Perhaps this company needs to better train its employees on how to close an account and disconnect a phone when it is requested to do so and a least admitt when the ball has been dropped on their end. I have never dealt with such a poorly run customer service department. And to think that I was actully going to get another phone through this company before all this b-.... happend.

I have been a customer for 2 years and I have to tell you SOLO Sucks! I have nothing but problems with them, they take money off my credit card when they shouldn't and then to get in touch with someone there is impossible I call their C.S Dept. to get disconnected and put on hold for an hour or more. Then to have their C.S Reps tell me they don't know!!!! And to boot they still charge me the $3.00 fee!! STICK WITH ROGERS!!

Feeling ripped off with Cellphone, IPhone, PDAs, BLACKBERRY?
You may wish to contact the Commissioner for Complaints for Telecommunications Services (CCTS). According to their website, www.ccts-cprst.ca, CCTS is an independent agency with a mandate to receive, to facilitate the resolution of, and, if necessary, resolve eligible consumer and small business complaints relating to certain retail telecommunications services. I have somebody close that has a cell phone contract with SOLO and due to financial hardship has been behind on the payments. The individual is in the situation where SOLO is billing them for months that they are not allowed to use on the contact because of late payments while forcing late interest charges for the months as well. Why would SOLO charge the consumer for months that they are not allowed to use? What is even worse is that the consumer is told that they are allowed to change the contract at any given time to suite needs but they will not allow the adjustment of the contract to a lower more affordable one while behind in a payment. After searching the net I’ve found endless problem and complaint of SOLO and other providers as well. I’m interested in hearing feedback to what options you found that are available and what excuses are offered for these kinds of practices? If you’re having problems with SOLO, Bell, Telus, Rodgers, Fido, KOODO, Virgin or which ever provider you have send them to http://twitter.com/phonecontract/comments

I am thoroughly disappointed with Solo.
I ordered a phone through them and when I received the phone it would not work. I then phoned them and they said that they would replace it. Several months laterr I am still waiting for that phone in which they are still charging me phone, even thought I don't have it. By now they have threatened to take me to the collections agency. I have phoned several times only to be passed from one person to another and they still don't know the answer. They say they will phone back, I am still waiting. I am thoroughly disgusted with the type of service I am receiving and why should I pay for a phone I do not have. I would surely call this poor customer service on your behalf, maybe you should take a look at all the reviews and try and rectorfy your business service. Very disappointed!!!!!!

i am thoroughly disgusted with solo's CS dept as off late Ive had the same prepaid for 5 years i just found out they have been charging me $3 a month for msn when i dont even use it when i asked to be credited i was told they could only go back 60 days and then charged me $3 for the call to customer service so out of the $150 they charged me they refunded $3 way to go! SOLOW should be the new company name!!!!!!!!

Can anyone tell me how to cancel my plan with Solo? I have been trying for weeks now to get ahold of someone to change my visa number and can't seem to get ahold of anyone via phone or internet. I got a phone as a gift from someone in December , the phone had 20$ already prepaid .
I decided to get unlimited text messaging for the month . Because vie never had a phone before I didn’t really look to much into reviews for phone companies , plus the person who gave me the phone already had it on solo. I thought that solo was a good company until they ripped me off.
At the start of the month when my original 20$ ran out I bought another phone card which is not supposed to expire till march 10th. However I noticed yesterday my phone was not letting me text certain people , but didn’t think much of it. Today I’m not receiving text messages at all , so I went to look online to see why I apparently have no money left on my account and they are charging me money although my plan shouldn’t have expired yet. I paid for unlimited texting for the month so I don’t see why my phone would have ran out out money , and is charging me money. I looked up other reviews and majority are bad.
SOLO MOBILE IS A HORRIBLE PHONE COMPANY. And I say that to help anyone who is thinking about using it . DON’T BECAUSE IT’S A WASTE OF MONEY AND A MJOR RIP OFF. Also when I first got the phone unlimited texting only coasted 10$ for the month but then they ranked it up to 15$ the following month , is it really right for phone companies to change plans without additional warning? I don’t think so!’
Never ever will I use solo mobile again , I want my money back ! Not to mention that unlimited texting is supposed to cost only 10$ yet I’m putting in 20$ its taking all of my money and charging me more then that.
This is honestly stupid. If anything this phone company owes me money.

Solo Prepaid makes their profit through hidden charges and terrrible customer service.

I bought a phone from Solo because of their plan. I had put additional funds on my account - I didn't want any surprises. Well, I was surprised - those funds evaporated and my service suspended. I went to their "self-serve" website to find out where the money had gone. Nothing to do there accept top-up!

I needed to use my phone, so I topped up and would follow up with Solo later (confident that they would rectify whatever the problem was). Big mistake...a week later, the money evaporated again. I call customer service and they were completely unhelpful - basically agreeing that their prepaid service is crap, the lowest of their concerns, and do not like being bothered with unhappy customers like me.

I decide to return the phone and go with a different provider. No-can-do they tell me. You've used more than 30 minutes - no refund!

Now, I'm furious, my money keeps dissappearing, my service is suspended - again - and I can't return the phone.

I try their online customer service....I go through multiple emails trying to exaplin why I want to be compensated but all I get are (what appears to be) auto-generated "you've been screwed" replies.

Oh - here's the gold medal for crappy service - they charged me $3.00 for that customer service call!

I've since escalated the issue through Bell Mobility and waiting to hear back from James Meyers office.

So here I am - I can't use their service because money disappears without accountability and I can't return the phone.

I've been ripped off, lied to, and scammed. Solo is the worst consumer experience of my life.

I hope this review helps others before they become victims.

2010/03/05

ya they sure do rip you off alot. i have been with them for short time now and i paid more than would with some other mobility service. they said a fee of $55.00 a month. and now they want more money than the set monthly plan i had signed up for.i'm paying $78.00 to $150.00 a month now and sometimes the month is not up and they are asking for more money or turn off my cell phone.when i firsted signed up with them had too pay just about $300.00 that's just just the firsted month.yes they are ripping us off. i need too go to another company soon or i'll paying over $1000.00 and i have not been with them for 6 months yet.

Dissatisfied
2010/03/05

Over paying. I have been with Solo a short time but they sure know how to keeping coming up with different ways to wrangle more and more money out of their customers. I guess the only course left for me is to contact the CCTS,maybe if enough customers complained to the CCTS they might do something about Solo. But the way I see it most Government and private agencies tend to favor the people with money. Don't ever go with Solo.

I had a solo phone witch stopped working, and was still under warranty
when i went to the booth, they informed that I could get a loaner, while my phone was out for repair, aprox 6 weeks, for $25.00, i reluctantly agreed, and they told me the phone would arrive within 2 day
After 10 days i returned to the mall, and was told by customer service that I would have to wait another 23 days, for a total of 33 days without the phone
i spoke with customer service, ant they told me the only options I had were that I could buy a NEW phone a at Full L price, live without a phone for six weeks, or wait the additional 23 days for the loaner to arrive
I returned the broken phone to the service counter and promptly got a new service at Virgin, the same phone that I had at Solo. I did not get any upgrades, or new features, the same phone, with the same service that I had at solo
I'm not a huge business customer, i don't have alot of extra charges, however I pay my phone on time every month, I also overpay my bill every moth, so that I had a credit on my account for $56.00

So here's what she agreed to do for me:
remove from the bill the $25.00 charge for the loaner fee, that I never received
and told me that I still have to pay the $300.00 for breaking my contract, and that I still have to pay for the phone service, for when my phone was broken, and would still have to pay for another 30 days after I cancelled my service
then before anyone would get back to me their filed a complaint on my credit report
They are greedy, lazy and a bully

It, works... for now. I'll be getting a better phone and plan pretty soon, but am waiting for an important call. I topped up yesterday and still waiting for my balance to be added. The phone is crap, and the website doesn't work properly. This is one thing I hated about moving to Canada, in Europe we have pay-per minute cards that never expire.

I work for Solo/Bell customer service. Quick fact: Solo is owned by Bell--we handle both Bell AND solo calls in the same customer service department. (Virgin and PC mobile is also owned by Bell). If you use the internet on your phone it charges 5cents a kilobyte--thats about 3 dollars for a single webpage. You also get charged for using the internet if you send a picture message (average pic msg charges I've seen are around $5).EVERY PHONE COMES WITH THE INTERNET---so even if you accidently press the web button on your phone or go to a solo webpage on you phone, it is considered a legitimate charge--you can ask to have the internet removed, but you cannot get your money back.Your plan will get billed every month on your billing date and if you don't have enough money to cover the cost of your plan on that date, it won't bill, and you'll get charged for everything as if you didn't have a plan--thats 15 cents per text(incoming as well) and 35 cents a minute, so make sure you have enough money on that date! Also, if you don't have a credit card on your account, there is a monthly service fee of $3, so you have to worry about covering the cost of your plan every month PLUS $3 or else once again, your plan will not bill and you'll have to add more money if you use your features. There is also a $3 service charge for calling into customer service, this is charged manually by the customer service representative, so most of the time you can ask them not to charge it if you are inquiring about something you didn't know about your account. There has to be at least 35 cents on your account for your phone to work. Even if you've paid for unlimited txting etc, it won't work if you have a anything below 35 cents as a balance.Other than that, the plans are pretty good, and there are no reactivation fees if your account cancels out, but if you don't use your phone for 120 days your account will cancel and you WILL lose your phone number. It costs $20 to change your phone number and $15 to add a new phone to your account. Don't buy nokia phones either, most of them use the HSPA network, which is known to have alot of problems for every company.Remember: it is considered a self maintained service, so if you get charged for something that you were not aware of on your phone, then it is considered your fault because you didn't call the self serve number to see if you went over your monthly amount of text messages or minutes, or if you didn't check to see if the money came off for your monthly plan etc. Always, ALWAYS read your terms of service, because thats where they can nip you in the butt.

Solo mobile is a decent phone service, not terrible and not amazing and I'll tell you why. I use it mainly because it requires no credit card. The thing is you MUST pay the amount that your phone is charged monthly or more your phone service will not last longer than a few days. So if you have a plan that costs $31, then you have to buy two $20 card that costs $40 total, a $30 card will not be enough and you'll get ripped so be careful. Also be careful of the $3 service charge and any added features. So if your plan is $30, but you have $6 call display + mandatory $3 service charge, your plan is really $39, so you need to pay $40 and not $30. Also, the plan is supposed to expire after about two months even if you never use it, but for some reason it expires exactly after one month even if you never use it, so I guess that's a lie. The website also has problems, but you just have to keep trying and it will eventually work.

I tried to pay our bill. Got a lecture on how I wasn't on the account and they couldn't talk to me. Which they couldn't because their line kept cutting out. When I asked to speak to a supervisor the incompetent hung up on me. I called back three times and finally gave up trying to pay the bill. I too, would give 0 stars. As soon as our contract is up i'm cancelling the contract. I can't wait.

They rip people off with prepaid phone. As these phones are given to kids to use. The features are not restricted when you get phone. Everything is avavailable. So when kids accidently hit web browser instead of send text on phone they are charged $3 per use. This is scam that happened to me. The customer service is horrible they blame bell bell blames them. Yet they are same company. If you need help with the phone or to talk to some one it costs you $3. great customer service. One giant Scam. I bought 3 solo phones for prepaid use for my sons. It cost me $500 for the phones. I put $100 on each phone for plan that was to cost $27 in total per month. Texting no web browser. At the end of one month they account balance was at 0. They had charged me $300 for one months service. I contacted them and they said it was because all services were left on phone and I was charged $3 per web browser use. I said this was not to on phone it was to be restricted. So contact Bell it was their fault not theres. Went to bell they said it was Solo s fault yet it is same company. It is designed to steal your money.

They don't have any people in which you can talk to, when they tell you
The automated voice and text messaging continually stated
"I'm sorry you have insufficient funds"
after I have put 40 dollars on my account. I also was given a 25 dollar free bonus.
SCAM SCAM SCAM! STAY AWAY!

I got an LG Rumour in June. I wanted texting so they gave me the option of 50 cents daily OR %15 monthly. I chose $15 monthly. The first 3 months of my phone I added almost $100 in prepaid cards and I called them to find out why I always had a low balance and they said they were charging me the TWO options for the same service. So I was paying BOTH 50 cents daily AND $15 monthly when I should have only been charged the $15. They added $45 to my account to make up the difference and said they would not charge me $3 service fee because it was their error. Now in May I added Unlimited Mobile Browser feature for $7 and after it took the money off my account they were still charging me by the kilobyte. They gave me $13 back to my account for it. The ONLY TWO TIMES I either activated or added features to my account they have charged me more than I should have been. It's Reiculous. They should be more careful with these things. We shouldn't have to worry about what we're paying just because they're not doing their jobs currectly

Solo would not give me a better offer (reduced rate) if I added NA long distance plan...so I changed to the least expensive, dropped call display and dropped voice mail...I will leave Solo Mobile as soon as my contract expires...and back to Rogers Wireless service pronto tonto
